Project Two: Exploring Color Combinations in Nature
A good background in color theory is essential to a hand weaver. Believe me I have woven some real disasters! And with all the other things to think about in weaving it helps to be confident at least about the colors of the threads or yarn you have chosen. Of course, you could and should consult art books, books on color theory, look at fashion and home decor magazines, and don't forget advertising art and colors of products and packaging. But it would be fun to study color in our own special desert southwest. Here are some ideas to get you started.
1. Do some beach combing along the Colorado and weave what you find into a nature weaving.
2. Color some index cards with crayons or makers to duplicate the ever changing colors on the river and plants along the banks.
3. Collect some wildflowers.
4. Collect some pretty rocks.
5. Have a special feel for flowers, butterflies, wild animals, birds, or places in nature? Look for photos to study.
Start a collection of your ideas and bring your collection next time.
Here's some homework for the bookies (folks who are weaving bookmarks).
Take three index cards. There are crayons and markers to share. Design three bookmark. Here's an idea to get you started.
